During the time that we had together, my dog Bluebelle and I got into beach combing during our long walks. In Port Townsend, I mostly picked up sea glass from the old dump site at Point McCurdy, a 2.5 mile hike down from North Beach, which was only possible at low tide. I also got agates, and bits of porcelain, shell and tile. When I moved to Ferndale in May of 2020, I started taking walks on the banks of the Nooksack, and began noticing how the river sometimes made these perfectly shaped rocks - really flat, trianular, symmetrical. A rock that looks like a piano key. A rock that looks like a mento. I coveted them for the shape of them, and I started picking them up. I like the way the saltwater took broken things, and made them soft, and I like the way the river flowed and made these perfect shapes from the stones. Now in Everson with my husband and two other dogs, I still hunt the beaches and think about my Bluebelle and how she loved to pick up rocks and carry them home in her mouth.
